Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to Visit Sri Lanka, Witness Signing of Free Trade Agreement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, is set to embark on a two-day official visit to Sri Lanka from February 3 to 4, 2024. During his visit, he will witness the signing of the Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (SLTFTA).

Prime Minister Thavisin’s visit comes at the invitation of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has also extended an invitation for Thavisin to participate as a Guest of Honour at the ceremony commemorating Sri Lanka’s 76th Anniversary of Independence.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Thavisin is scheduled to engage in official discussions with President Wickremesinghe during his visit. The historic SLTFTA will be signed during his stay, with Phumtham Wechayachai, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, and Nalin Fernando, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, officiating the agreement.

The SLTFTA is anticipated to bolster trade and investment relations between the two nations and foster deeper integration with ASEAN economies. Additionally, discussions are expected to revolve around renewing the Air Services Agreement and finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding between Sri Lanka’s Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute and Thailand’s Gem and Jewelry Institute. The visit signifies a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral ties and advancing economic cooperation between Thailand and Sri Lanka.
