Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath announced that three individuals have been arrested in connection with intelligence reports of potential security threats to Israeli nationals in Sri Lanka. The arrests were made following concerns about the safety of tourists amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Herath confirmed that the three suspects are currently being interrogated. He emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety of all tourists visiting Sri Lanka, stating:
“Intelligence agencies received information indicating possible threats to tourists in Sri Lanka, especially Israeli nationals. Upon receiving this information, we acted swiftly. The Security Council convened several times during the past month, and immediate steps were taken.”
In response to the threat, additional police security has been deployed in popular tourist areas, including Arugam Bay, Bandarawela, Ella, Matara, Weligama, and Ahungalla Beach, starting from the beginning of this month.
Minister Herath explained that the National Security Council thoroughly discussed the intelligence, leading to the arrests based on the gathered information. He also noted that authorities are investigating whether the suspects knowingly or unknowingly attempted to disrupt security.
The minister reassured the public and tourists that all necessary security measures have been implemented to prevent any potential attacks. “There is no need for fear regarding attacks on Israelis or others. We have taken every possible step to ensure safety,” he stated.
He added that Sri Lanka expects normalcy to return within a few days, which could lead to the lifting of travel advisories issued by the United States and other nations. These countries, he said, are already satisfied with Sri Lanka’s security measures and confident in the safety of their citizens visiting the island.
“Tourist arrivals remain unaffected. Israeli tourists are continuing to visit Sri Lanka without issues, and those currently here are enjoying their travels freely. We have successfully managed the situation,” Minister Herath concluded.
