At least 36 people lost their lives, and six others were injured when a bus plunged into a gorge in Uttarakhand, northern India, on Monday, a local official reported to Reuters.
The bus, carrying at least 42 passengers, was traveling from Garhwal in the Himalayas to the town of Ramnagar, according to Devendra Pincha, a local police officer, who provided details by phone.
Footage from ANI news agency, partly owned by Reuters, shows the overturned bus lying beside a river at the bottom of a steep hill.
State Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on X that an inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
