UN High Commissioner Highlights Elections as a Chance for Sri Lanka to Embrace New Vision and Reforms

Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, underscored the importance of upcoming elections as a crucial opportunity for Sri Lankan political leaders to commit to a renewed vision for the country and address lingering concerns.

During a global update, Türk emphasized the need for a free civic space for political campaigning and debate, free from violence and restrictions on freedom of expression, association, and assembly.

Türk acknowledged that while the immediate risk of conflict in Sri Lanka may be low, there remains a significant risk of repeated human rights violations. He urged continued efforts toward accountability and long-term reforms, including security sector reforms, to prevent future abuses.

“It’s now 15 years since the end of the conflict, and we all hope the violence and suffering of that period will never be repeated,” Türk stated. He reaffirmed his office’s commitment to working with Sri Lanka, its citizens, and the new government to support the country’s democratic process and economic development.

Türk stressed that the UN Human Rights Office’s engagement in Sri Lanka is focused on addressing underlying issues that have hindered sustainable peace and development. He highlighted that the voices in their reports are those of Sri Lankans, particularly victims of past injustices and violence.

“I hope the Council will continue to hear these voices and persist in its efforts to promote accountability, reconciliation, and human rights for all Sri Lankans in a constructive spirit,” Türk added.
