University of Colombo’s Scientific Think-Tank Ventures into Anti-Aging Nutraceutical Capsules

A scientific think-tank affiliated with the University of Colombo is on the verge of introducing an anti-aging nutraceutical capsule, marking a pioneering endeavor in Sri Lanka.

Professor Sameera R. Samarakoon, head of the team at the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology, University of Colombo, disclosed to the Daily Mirror that the capsule, crafted from natural ingredients, is currently in development. However, specifics regarding the ingredients remain undisclosed at this juncture.

After extensive research, the drug is nearing its final stages before launch. Prof. Samarakoon expressed confidence that the capsule would hit the market within the next four months.

While acknowledging the popularity of anti-aging drugs globally, the professor highlighted the exorbitant prices of imported products available in Sri Lanka. The imminent product, being a traditional formulation, necessitates approval from the Department of Ayurveda.

Emphasizing collaboration, Prof. Samarakoon noted that the project materialized through University Business Linkage, facilitating knowledge sharing, research, innovation, and technology advancement.

Established under the leadership of Prof. Eric H. Karunanayake, the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology operates independently within the University of Colombo, catering to instruction, training, research, and consultancy in its specialized domains.

In a separate breakthrough, the Institute recently unveiled a nutraceutical drug named ‘Vernolac,’ capable of combating approximately 25 types of cancer cells. This non-toxic herbal formulation, the result of 12 years of rigorous scientific inquiry led by Prof. Sameera Samarakoon, impedes the rapid proliferation of cancer cells and is suitable for individuals at risk of cancer development.

Moreover, the Institute introduced ‘Satiny’ hair oil, targeting hair loss, which is currently available in the market, expanding its portfolio of innovative solutions. Source – Daily Mirror
