USAID Administrator Samantha Power Urges President Ranil Wickremesinghe to Address Concerns Over Online Safety Act’s Impact on Freedom of Expression

In a virtual conversation held on Tuesday (Feb. 13), USAID Administrator Samantha Power raised concerns with President Ranil Wickremesinghe regarding the potential impact of the Online Safety Act on freedom of expression. The head of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) emphasized the need for President Wickremesinghe to address these concerns and also underscored the importance of sustaining investment in Sri Lanka’s dynamic digital economy.

A statement from USAID conveyed that Power “encouraged President Wickremesinghe to address concerns about the potential impact of the Online Safety Act on freedom of expression, as well as investment in Sri Lanka’s vibrant digital economy.”

During the virtual meeting, the USAID chief delved into discussions about Sri Lanka’s economic reform agenda, emphasizing the significance of democratic governance and a consultative legislative process. Power expressed USAID’s dedication to collaborating with President Wickremesinghe in tackling challenging economic issues.

Furthermore, Power highlighted the unwavering support of the United States for freedom of expression and association, underlining the commitment to fostering these fundamental principles.
