Wanindu Hasaranga’s Exclusion from RCB Raises Eyebrows Ahead of IPL Auction

The omission of Wanindu Hasaranga from the list of retained players by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has sparked considerable surprise. In the 2022 IPL Auction, RCB made a substantial investment of INR 10.75 Crore in the Sri Lankan all-rounder, who played a pivotal role as their primary spinner. As Hasaranga enters the auction pool, multiple teams are anticipated to vie for his services, given his proficiency in both batting in the middle-order and delivering lethal variations in bowling, rendering him a formidable T20 player.

The dynamic all-rounder’s ability to hit the ball long when needed not only adds flexibility to his team but also enables the selection of an additional specialist player to address team weaknesses.

Immediate Impact and RCB Association

Wanindu Hasaranga demonstrated promise early in his career, notably as part of the 2016 Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup squad, where he impressed with 7 wickets, including a notable performance against England. Initially recognized for his batting prowess, he evolved into a prominent all-rounder after showcasing his bowling skills. His international debut in 2017 saw him make history as the third debutant in ODI history to secure a hat-trick.

Although overlooked in his first IPL auction in 2021, Hasaranga was later enlisted by RCB as a replacement for the injured Adam Zampa. Despite playing only two matches in his debut season, RCB harbored a long-term plan for him. In the subsequent season, he played a pivotal role in RCB’s playoff journey, claiming 26 wickets at an impressive average of 16.54, including his first five-wicket haul.

Teams Eyeing Hasaranga in the Auction

With RCB releasing him ahead of the Mini Auction, teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings are potential suitors for Hasaranga’s services.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, equipped with Indian spinners, could enhance their bowling attack’s overall quality by adding Hasaranga’s prowess. With a substantial budget of Rs 34 crore, they have the financial capacity to make a significant bid.

Delhi Capitals, possessing a strong left-arm spin duo, sees the addition of a right-arm leg-spinner like Hasaranga as a valuable asset. His ability to exploit conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium could further bolster their squad, with Rs 28.95 crore at their disposal.

Punjab Kings, opting for youth in their retentions, may seek Hasaranga’s experience to complement their spin department. With Rs 29.1 crore in their kitty and room for two more overseas players, they have the means to pursue the Sri Lankan all-rounder.
