Bangladesh Foreign Minister Expresses Eagerness to Boost Trade and Commerce with Sri Lanka

Today, Dr. Hasan Mahmud, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, conveyed his strong interest in expanding trade and commerce between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka during a meeting with Sri Lankan High Commissioner Dharmapala Weerakkody at the foreign ministry in Dhaka.

Discussions between the two officials covered a range of mutual interests, with Mahmud expressing satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between the two nations. He extended his gratitude to the High Commissioner for conveying congratulatory messages to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the Head of State and the Head of the Government of Sri Lanka, following the victory in the 12th National Parliamentary elections.

Mahmud, acknowledging Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, assured continued support from Bangladesh during times of crisis. Emphasizing the untapped potential of both countries, he underscored the need to strengthen relations for the betterment of their peoples. Mahmud proposed further intensification of bilateral cooperation in trade, agriculture, fisheries, ICT, hospitality, shipping, maritime connectivity, and people-to-people contact.

He suggested expanding bilateral trade by exporting high-quality pharmaceuticals and garments to Sri Lanka, while also inviting more Sri Lankan investments in Economic Zones. Mahmud stressed the importance of promptly concluding bilateral instruments, including the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).

High Commissioner Weerakkody provided insights into Sri Lanka’s current economic situation, emphasizing its recovery phase with support from friendly countries like Bangladesh. He highlighted the potential for both nations to collaborate on expanding sectoral cooperation for mutual benefit.

The Foreign Minister sought Sri Lanka’s support in the early repatriation of Rohingyas and proposed extensive cooperation in regional bodies such as SAARC, BIMSTEC, and IORA. Mahmud wished the High Commissioner a successful tenure in Bangladesh and assured him of full support.
