Today, the Cabinet granted approval for the importation of an additional 42 million eggs to meet the needs of the populace and ensure fair pricing, announced Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana.
Minister Gunawardana elaborated that Cabinet’s decision aims to stabilize the domestic market until April 30 by importing a sufficient stock of eggs. Notably, the approval includes the importation of 42 million eggs, specifically catering to the requirements of the upcoming New Year festive season, with 18 million eggs already in the procurement pipeline.
To facilitate the importation process, the government has solicited quotations from Indian institutions recommended by the Animal Production and Health Department. The Cabinet further endorsed President’s proposal to entrust the procurement to the relevant entity, as suggested by the Standing Procurement Committee appointed by the Cabinet.
