Delay in Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project Results in Nearly 200 Billion Rupees Loss

The State Minister of Power and Energy, Indika Anuruddha, has revealed that due to delays in the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project, the country has incurred a loss of nearly 200 billion rupees. Originally planned with an expenditure of 529 million USD in 2010, the project was approved by the Cabinet in 2008, with work commencing on March 15, 2010. Despite initial plans for completion in 2015, the project faced setbacks.

However, the State Minister has announced that the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project will finally be handed over to the public on either the 24th or 25th of this month. These efforts have been supported by the Iranian government, with the President of Iran expected to attend the opening ceremony. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently making necessary preparations for this event.

Upon completion, the project will contribute 120 MW of hydropower to the national energy grid, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy development efforts.
