Heat Index Advisory Issued by the Department of Meteorology for February 23

The Department of Meteorology has issued a Heat Index Advisory for tomorrow, February 23, covering various parts of the country, including Gampaha and Colombo districts.

According to the advisory, the heat index, which indicates the temperature felt on the human body, is anticipated to escalate to the ‘caution’ level in certain areas of the North-western and North-central provinces, as well as in Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota, and Trincomalee Districts.

The advisory underscores that under such temperature conditions, individuals may experience fatigue with prolonged exposure and activity. Continued activity in such conditions could potentially lead to heat strokes.

In light of this advisory, the general public is strongly advised to maintain hydration levels, seek shade frequently, and minimize strenuous outdoor activities. Furthermore, individuals are encouraged to wear lightweight, white, or light-colored clothing to mitigate the impact of the heat.

It’s essential to understand that the Heat Index Forecast is derived from a combination of relative humidity and maximum temperature, reflecting the perceived temperature on the body. It is not a forecast of the maximum temperature itself. This forecast is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the upcoming day period, utilizing data from global numerical weather prediction models.
