Japan to Provide Vessel with Sonar System to Enhance Sri Lanka’s Oceanographic Survey Capabilities

Japanese Deputy Press Secretary Kaneko Mariko has announced that the Japanese government has finalized plans to furnish Sri Lanka with a vessel equipped with underwater sonar technology aimed at enhancing the country’s oceanographic survey capabilities.

During a bilateral discussion between Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Sri Lankan officials on Saturday, Minister Kamikawa formally communicated Japan’s decision regarding the provision of the vessel and sonar system.

The Japanese government has earmarked approximately 01 billion Yen for this initiative, signaling a significant investment in bolstering Sri Lanka’s maritime capabilities. Minister Kamikawa is expected to underscore Japan’s commitment to realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific region while demonstrating support for Sri Lanka, which occupies a strategic position along crucial sea lanes.
