Maldives Coast Guard Detains Two Sri Lankan Fishing Boats for Alleged Illegal Fishing in Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has apprehended two Sri Lankan fishing boats, accusing them of engaging in illegal fishing within the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The MNDF’s Northern Area Command Coast Guard First Squadron took control of the two fishing vessels following a report received by the MNDF Coast Guard on January 25. One boat reportedly carried seven crew members, while the other had six, as per foreign media reports.

Both vessels are presently in the custody of the Coast Guard First Squadron’s Coast Guard Ship Nooraddeen, stationed at Haa Alif Filladhoo harbor, according to the MNDF.

Foreign media sources indicate that the detained fishing boats will be transported to Male City and subsequently handed over to the police.
