Minister of Power and Energy Announces Proposed Electricity Tariff Reductions Effective July 2024

Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekara, revealed a proposal to reduce electricity tariffs effective from July 1, 2024.

Speaking during today’s Parliamentary session, Minister Wijesekara announced that the proposal aims to provide more relief to domestic consumers and is expected to receive approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).

The proposed changes include a reduction in the rate charged per unit of electricity for various consumption brackets within the domestic category. Specifically, the rate for the first 30 units will be reduced by Rs. 02, bringing the new rate per unit to Rs. 06.

For consumption between 31-60 units, the rate will be reduced by Rs. 11, lowering the charge per unit to Rs. 09. Meanwhile, the rate for 60-90 units will be reduced from Rs. 30 to Rs. 18 per unit.

Additionally, the tariff for consumption between 90-180 units will be reduced by Rs. 20, bringing the new rate down to Rs. 30 per unit.

Minister Wijesekara stated that the proposal will be submitted to the PUCSL tomorrow (June 7) or Monday (June 10) and is anticipated to be approved.
