New Electricity Sector Reforms Bill to be Gazetted Within Two Weeks, Confirms Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera

Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, has announced that the new Bill on electricity sector reforms will be gazetted within the next two weeks. Subsequently, the Minister revealed that the new bill will be presented to Parliament during the last week of April.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to make the announcement, Wijesekera stated that the certification to proceed with the new draft bill was issued by the Attorney General last Monday.

Furthermore, the Energy Minister emphasized that stakeholders or any interested individuals will have at least two weeks to review the gazetted Bill, and an additional two weeks from the day of presentation to Parliament to challenge the Bill’s legality.

Wijesekera also noted that suggestions and issues raised by development agencies and stakeholders have been incorporated as amendments to the draft Bill that was gazetted in December. Additionally, inconsistencies in the Sinhala and Tamil translations have been rectified by the Legal Draftsman’s Department.

The progress of the electricity sector reforms was reviewed by Wijesekera at the Ministry of Power and Energy, in collaboration with officials from the Reforms Secretariat on Thursday (28).
