Registrar General’s Department Reports Significant Decline in Sri Lanka’s Annual Birth Rate and Increase in Annual Deaths Since 2020

The Registrar General’s Department has disclosed a notable shift in Sri Lanka’s demographic trends, revealing a decline in the annual birth rate alongside an increase in annual deaths since 2020.

According to Senior Deputy Registrar General, Attorney-at-Law Lakshika Ganepola, the annual number of births, previously at approximately 325,000 before 2020, has now decreased to 280,000.

Conversely, reports indicate a rise in the annual number of deaths to around 180,000, compared to 140,000 before 2020.

The Registrar General’s Department underscores that this situation is poised to negatively impact Sri Lanka’s population growth trajectory.
