Director General of the Election Commission, Saman Sri Ratnayake, has disclosed that a total sum of Rs 20 billion is necessary for the upcoming presidential and general elections. Ratnayake conveyed this information to journalists, emphasizing that he has already communicated this matter to Parliament and the finance ministry.
While the Presidential election is scheduled for this year, the current Parliament’s term is set to conclude in 2025. However, constitutional provisions allow the President to dissolve Parliament anytime after it completes four and a half years of its term, as per the 21st amendment to the constitution.
Despite the government’s assurance that the presidential election will take place this year, the opposition has raised concerns, alleging a hidden agenda to eliminate the Executive presidency without conducting the presidential poll.
