Sri Lankan LGBTIQ+ Community Delegates Engage in Productive Dialogue with Parliament Speaker

A delegation representing the Sri Lankan LGBTIQ+ community convened with Speaker of the Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana on Monday (12) to address crucial matters concerning the community’s rights and legislation.

The primary focus of the meeting was to bring the Speaker’s attention to the Private Member Bill introduced by Member of Parliament Premnath C. Dolawatte. This proposed bill aims to amend Sections 365 and 365A of the Penal Code of Sri Lanka, as stated by the Parliamentary Communications Department in an official statement.

Additionally, the LGBTIQ+ community representatives engaged in an extensive discussion with the Speaker, shedding light on the challenges faced by the community in Sri Lanka, as outlined in the department’s statement.

The meeting was organized with the assistance of NextGenSL, an all-party youth organization, emphasizing the collaborative efforts involved. Assistant Secretary General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne was also present, further highlighting the significance of this dialogue.
