Supreme Court Defers Verdict on Petitions Against 2023 Local Government Election Postponement

The Supreme Court has concluded its hearings on the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions challenging the postponement of the 2023 Local Government elections, deferring the delivery of its verdict.

The petitions, which contest the delay of the elections initially scheduled for March 9, 2023, were heard today (June 6) by a five-member bench of Supreme Court judges led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.

After completing the oral submissions, the judge bench announced the deferment of the verdict, according to an Ada Derana reporter.

The petitions were filed by several groups, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), and People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL). These groups are seeking a court order declaring that the postponement of the 2023 Local Government elections violated the fundamental human rights of the people.
