Weather Advisory: Thundershowers and Severe Lightning Expected Across the Island

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory, warning of thundershowers and severe lightning anticipated in various parts of the island for the remainder of the day.

According to the advisory, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected in several areas of the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Northern, and North-western provinces, as well as the Monaragala District. Temporary localized strong winds are also forecasted during thundershowers.

In light of the heightened risk, members of the public are strongly advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damages caused by lightning activity.

The advisory categorizes the risk level as “High” in the mentioned areas and advises the public to avoid open spaces such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

Additionally, individuals are urged to refrain from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms. It is recommended to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats, and to remain cautious of fallen trees and power lines.

For emergency assistance, the public is encouraged to reach out to local disaster management authorities.
